Has Emerging Church Leader Brian McLaren Endorsed Homosexuality?

In the January 23, 2006 edition of Christianity Today's Leadershipjournal.net, Emerging Church leader, Brian McLaren, made this statement in regards to whether or not homosexuality is immoral, "Perhaps we need a five-year moratorium on making pronouncements. In the meantime, we'll practice prayerful Christian dialogue, listening respectfully, disagreeing agreeably. When decisions need to be made, they'll be admittedly provisional. We'll keep our ears attuned to scholars in biblical studies, theology, ethics, psychology, genetics, sociology, and related fields. Then in five years, if we have clarity, we'll speak; if not, we'll set another five years for ongoing reflection. After all, many important issues in church history took centuries to figure out. Maybe this moratorium would help us resist the "winds of doctrine" blowing furiously from the left and right, so we can patiently wait for the wind of the Spirit to set our course."

Evidently, McLaren's 5-year moratorium is over in less than 5 years. In a piece in The Washington Post, McLaren said, "Since I come from an Evangelical background, most of my good friends sincerely and passionately hold the strict conservative view on homosexuality with which we all were raised. They can't understand why I don't stand side by side with them on this issue any more."

oh you've really found out who Maclaren is now! You've got the good on him! He's a heretic! well, I celebrate heresy. Luther did too.

Jesus had nothing to say about gayness. Paul did, but he was wrong and just importing his Hellenistic Judaism into the religion of Jesus.

With all due respect Malcolm, Jesus is God in human flesh; and Paul was writing under the inspiration of God, therefore since all Scripture is God-breathed (see-2 Tim. 3:16), whatever the Bible says, Jesus has said, and God said by Paul.

so let's bring back those levitical laws about how to do sacrifices properly and not mixing dairy and meat. there is a long list there beyond this, so we better get busy.

Jesus was really concerned with this and following the letter of the law wasn't he, so I am sure he'd be behind your campaign against gays. gimme a break.

let me just say one more thing here. I don't want this to turn into an angry shouting match, which will be totally unproductive. But I have to say that I believe you have totally misread the gospel. There was a poll recently conducted among 19-36 year old and it asked which adjectives do you most readily associate with the term "Christian". an overwhelming majority chose the adjs "hypocritical, closed-minded, and judgemental." I believe you are harming the church with your views and are causing the decline of the church becasue you are destroying the loving and accepting nature of it. I also see that you are not terribly grounded in biblical scholarship in that the Letters to Timothy are not accepted as genuine letters of Paul by the scholarly community of Paul scholars. If you would like to discuss this with me further, email me. xyz2112nirvana@gmail.com. It is not necessary to have this discussion in public as that adds to the shouting match nature of it which i am trying to avoid here.
